Frequently asked questions
What is one half as a percentage?
One half (1/2) is 50%. Divide the numerator by the denominator and multiply by 100: 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5; × 100 = 50%. Two halves make a whole, which is 100%.
Why do some of these recur?
Because the denominator (3 or 6) doesn't divide cleanly into 100. The decimal repeats forever — 1/3 = 0.333... For practical use, round to 2 or 4 decimal places.
How do I memorise these?
Quarters and fifths are the easiest UK shopping shortcuts: 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%. Halves and thirds map to the most common discount percentages.
