Frequently asked questions
What is one sixth as a percentage?
One sixth (1/6) is 16.67% (rounded; 16.6666... recurring). Divide 1 by 6 and multiply by 100: 1 ÷ 6 = 0.1666...; × 100 = 16.67%. The decimal recurs because 6 doesn't divide cleanly into 100. Two sixths simplifies to one third (33.33%).
Why do some of these recur?
Because the denominator (3 or 6) doesn't divide cleanly into 100. The decimal repeats forever — 1/3 = 0.333... For practical use, round to 2 or 4 decimal places.
How do I memorise these?
Quarters and fifths are the easiest UK shopping shortcuts: 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%. Halves and thirds map to the most common discount percentages.
