Frequently asked questions
What is one third as a percentage?
One third (1/3) is 33.33% (recurring). Divide the numerator by the denominator and multiply by 100: 1 ÷ 3 = 0.3333...; × 100 = 33.33...%. Two thirds (2/3) is 66.67%. The decimal recurs because 3 doesn't divide cleanly into 100.
Why do some of these recur?
Because the denominator (3 or 6) doesn't divide cleanly into 100. The decimal repeats forever — 1/3 = 0.333... For practical use, round to 2 or 4 decimal places.
How do I memorise these?
Quarters and fifths are the easiest UK shopping shortcuts: 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%. Halves and thirds map to the most common discount percentages.
